We took some time this morning to honor our Veterans with a program to show them our gratitude for their service. The program started with the pledge of allegiance, followed by the national anthem sang by the high school choir and directed by Mr. Josh Morphew. Mrs. Fischer and a group of her 4th grade students then showed us the proper technique for folding the flag and shared a poem with us. After honoring all of our veterans in attendance a special performance of the song "No Greater Love" was done by an all-grade choir under the direction of Mr. Morphew. This led us to a fantastic speech by our very own Mr. Doug Edberg about his time served in the Navy. The program concluded with another song by our high school choir titled "We Honor You" and a thank you to all who attended by Mr. Fischer. THANK YOU to all who attended to help us give thanks to our veterans today! We were especially grateful for all of the veterans who could join us and let us honor them.

This week we turn the spotlight to yet another fantastic teacher in our building with multiple years of service to our school and community. We are very fortunate to have high quality educators in our building and Mrs. Childress is a great example of one. Staff Spotlight - Jodi Childress - 1st Grade Teacher Favorites: Color - Teal Hobby - Watching my kids activities and reading a good book Food - Mexican Drink - Lavender lemonade About Me: I first moved to Centerville in fifth grade, graduating from Centerville School in 2000. This community has always held a special place in my heart, and in 2011, my husband Brady and I returned to raise our family here. We've been blessed with 20 years of marriage and four wonderful children. Brady works at Avera and enjoys being involved in activities in the community. Our oldest, Micah, graduated high school this past spring and is now pursuing a degree in Christian studies with an emphasis in youth ministry through Grand Canyon University’s online program. Our only daughter, Haley, is currently a junior with a passion for volleyball and basketball. Zach, a freshman, is active in football, basketball, track, and baseball. Finally, our youngest, Gavin, a sixth grader, shares his brother’s enthusiasm for sports, eagerly participating in them all.       This is my ninth year teaching in Centerville, and with each passing year—whether in Kindergarten, 5th grade, or now 1st grade—my passion for teaching has only deepened. Each grade and every student has brought something unique to my journey, and I treasure the connections and memories we've built together. I genuinely believe I learn as much from my students as they do from me. There’s something truly special about waking up every day to do what I love, surrounded by incredible colleagues and remarkable students who make this work so meaningful. Favorite Memory at CHS: I have so many incredible memories, but if you were at the Girl's State basketball tournament last year, you'll understand why that day stands out as my favorite. It wasn’t just about the girls winning—though that in itself was unforgettable—it was everything that happened afterward. Watching our team celebrate with such genuine joy and grace, inviting the girls from the other teams to join in, showed a true spirit of sportsmanship and unity. That moment embodied the heart of our community and school, and it’s one I’ll carry with me forever, reminding me how proud I am to be part of something so special. Why did you choose education? From a young age, I knew I wanted to work with kids, and my dad always encouraged me to consider teaching. I was a daycare provider for 10 years because I wanted to stay at home with my own kids, but when my dad was re-diagnosed with cancer in 2014, it became clear to me that I wanted him to see me actively pursuing that dream. That year, I began my education journey online with Grand Canyon University.

This week we turn the spotlight to our highly decorated band director Mrs. Kay Herrboldt. She has built one of the most respectable band programs in the state and we are very thankful for her years of dedication to the Tornadoes! Staff Spotlight - Kay Herrboldt - Band Director Favorites: Color: Red Hobby: Boating, Watching any activity my kids are doing, playing games on my phone Food: Chinese Drink: Diet Coke About Me: This is my 35th year of teaching instrumental music. My husband and I live on a farm near Lesterville and have two children, Tori and Trent. Kelly farms for a living, Tori goes to college in Laramie, Wyoming for music education and Trent goes to school in Lincoln, Nebraska for Exercise Science. Favorite Memory at CHS: As most of you know, marching season is my favorite time of the year. I really do not have one specific memory that stands out or maybe I just can't remember at my age. LOL! There is nothing better than to watch the marching band go down the street with all their pride and energy! I LOVE IT!!!! Why did you choose education? Well - Funny story - I went to college to be an accountant. When my mom and I got to USD to sign up for classes, the band professor(Dr. Mitchell) came up to me and suggested I should take some music classes and come to band and see if I would like it. He thought I would be good at teaching music and thought I would enjoy it better then accounting. Well, the rest is history. I never looked back. The only person that has ever asked me if I thought I made the right decision was my dad. He thought I was crazy for going into instrumental music. Back when I started 35 years ago, there was only men in this business. He wanted me to go into choral music and I had no interest in that at all. As you all know, my dad was one of my biggest supporters. I am so, so glad I decided to become as educator! The students have taught me so much about life and also about challenges. Yes, it is a tough job but it is also very rewarding!!
