A message from SD Secretary of Education Dr. Ben Jones: Face-to-face learning is best. I know I don’t have to tell you that. It’s what educators, students, and communities want, and I know that schools are doing everything they can to maintain in-person learning. Nonetheless, as the pandemic continues, so does the need for distance learning. So, how do we make the most of this situation? We strive to make distance learning, when it’s necessary, the best it can be. The first step is access. To that end, Governor Noem recently launched the K-12 Connect program to provide free internet service to those students whose families cannot afford internet connectivity in their homes. With the widespread use of distance learning, this connectivity is crucial to ensure students maintain access to their schoolwork. Families in your schools who are eligible for this program should be receiving letters in the mail, with instructions for taking advantage of the program. Letters were mailed Oct. 26, and the enrollment deadline is Nov. 20. The free service, made possible through CARES Act funding, will last through June 30, 2021, at which time households will either need to return the equipment or continue the service at the household’s expense.

Parents: We made it through a little bit of a rough week. We hope that everyone takes the time over the long break to take a breath to relax. We also ask you to monitor the health of your children, social gathers, and social media. It is going to take a team effort to stay healthy and learning. Have a great long weekend!
Good morning. We are glad to have students back in the building and appreciate the chance to reconnect, meet new faces, and find a flow. Unfortunately, we are experiencing some negativity once again in the form of anonymous social media accounts. In a perfect world, these “anonymous” Instagram accounts would not exist and our Tornado students would not be involved. However, that is not the case. Although anonymous accounts can be traced when certain agencies are contacted, these accounts are still at the forefront of social media. At this time, we would like to raise awareness for parents and to encourage students to consider their morals and ethics and to fight the peer pressure to follow, create or post to these accounts. Show your Tornado Pride and decide to make choices that will set you up for success in the future and leave a positive legacy . We encourage you to not spread gossip, defame others, or submit content to one of your peers to shame others, it is NOT the Tornado way. Parents, I encourage you to visit with your child about their online habits and the content they are seeking out. Please ask your child to be responsible with the content they create or follow on Instagram and other social media platforms.

Yesterday, will walked back into the classroom for the first time since leaving school abruptly on March 13, 2020 due to the coronavirus. Students ended the year in a remote learning environment, missing out on important face-to-face instruction and relationships with teachers and friends. As students and staff return to school this fall, they will bring their collective experiences with them and make a fresh start. As we prepare to greet them, we are asking our entire community to come together to support our staff and our students with the message that no matter the learning space - we are ALL in this “together.” Hang a royal blue ribbon in your window. Write “together” in window paint. Decorate your home and office to show support. Let staff and students know you’re standing by them. You care about them. You wish them success. We know school won’t look and feel exactly the same this year. But, school is still school – a place where hope and possibility meet for a bright future. We are better “together.”
Good Morning Students, Happy first day of school. Our parking lot is being worked on. Students will need to park at the bus barn or Catholic Church across from the library.

Open House: As a district, we are preparing for the return of our students and the start of the 2020-2021 school year. The pandemic and Covid-19 have required us to change how we handle a variety of items within our district. Open house is very popular and draws a large crowd for us. To help reduce the number of people we have in a classroom or our building at once we are spacing the open house out. We will have our back to school open house on Monday, August 17th from 10:00am-8:00pm. We are asking families to sign up for a 25-minute time slot, we are allowing 6 families per slot. If you and your family are able to attend during the day, we ask that you sign for a day time slot. We have many families that will need an evening time slot because of work and travel. Join us as we light up the football/track complex for this event: South Dakota will be lighting it up from Mount Rushmore to Falls Park on Friday, May 1st. 'Let It Shine South Dakota' is the name of the event and communities throughout the entire state are expected to participate. Their mission? To shine a light on all that is good. Back on March 30th, the city of Sioux Falls organized 'Light Up Sioux Falls', to show their appreciation for everything healthcare workers were doing locally, and around the world; to give hope to the sick who desperately need it at this time, and to honor the businesses and employees who are struggling at this time. The event was such a success that the organizers decided to bring it statewide. On May 1st communities, businesses, and individual residents are invited to head outside and let it shine. This event is in honor of all of those on the front line fighting this disease, as well as in remembrance for those we have lost. Good Afternoon, In a press conference this afternoon, Governor Noem closed schools in South Dakota for the week of March 23-27. For us, that means, no access to the school, wellness center, Tornado Time, or library. We will continue to provide grab and go lunches next week Monday-Friday from 11:00-12:30. Thank you to those that came for lunches today. We encourage you to have your children come for lunch tomorrow and all next week. We find it very important to continue in our efforts to provide an education for our students. We understand that it will not be like a teacher delivering direct instruction. The teachers have been here today and will be here tomorrow to gather materials for next week. These materials can be picked up at the front door anytime Monday morning. If your student/s need additional items from their locker or desk, a school staff member will take them to gather any needed items. If you can't make it here Monday before 12:30, a school staff member will deliver your child/ren's work to your house Monday. If you or your student have questions about a given assignment or instruction, I encourage you to email the teacher or me. We will continue to update this situation as we know the information. The Governor is taking this on a week by week basis, we will be conducting our business in the same fashion. Stay safe!
